Greetings for the day!
Seeking your support and consideration, I am writing to you on my personal incident which could have put me and my baby in my womb at life risk had I not applied my logic and questioned the readings of the faulty Apollo Glucometer recently. I am sharing my story below, to let you know the harassment I had to undergo being a pregnant lady for faulty devices of Apollo.
I am currently 6 months pregnant and was advised by my doc to monitor my glucose level for 1 week, 4 times per day (@fasting, post breakfast, lunch and dinner).
I purchased Apollo Glucometer and after the initial 2 days, the reading started rising like hell. Without knowing that the readings were all faulty ones, I measured according to doc’s suggestion and took my 1 week readings to the doc. Looking at those readings, the doc changed my entire diet and asked me to monitor for 1 more week so that if necessary she can prescribe the required medicine since all readings were comparatively high.
The following week, I was taken aback when I checked my post 1 hr breakfast (1 glass of milk, 2 bread butter toast with simple cucumber stuffing) reading which turned out to be 188 mg/dL.! I instantly decided to do a lab blood test to see whether this reading is accurate! Here, I should mention that in Glucometers the blood sugar level is measured directly from blood whereas in labs tests are done on the plasma, hence, a difference of max. 10 -15 units is commendable. But here, the readings are showing an obnoxious difference!
I went for post lunch blood test that day itself and also did the Apollo Glucometer test at the lab so that the timing is same when blood is drawn. You must be waiting to know the result and here it is:
Lab test result came as 97 mg/dL whereas the Apollo Glucometer Reading result was 148 mg/dl
I complained to Apollo Pharmacy from where I purchased the device and they gave me a fresh one to check if that was showing correct reading! But I completely lost trust in Apollo’s device and hence I wanted to check my fasting blood sugar reading applying the same method the very next day with the new Apollo device. Report was as follows, again a good difference of 32 units:
Lab test result came as 79 mg/dL whereas the Apollo Glucometer Reading result was 111 mg/dl
So the second device was also not giving correct reading!
Thinking that had I not applied my logic and tested the above way, I would have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes as per the faulty readings and doc would have prescribed medicine for me! When actually I don’t have any sign of diabetes at all, if I had unknowingly taken those medicine based on this Apollo Glucometer reading, it would have lowered my normal blood sugar level and there would have been an issue of life and death for me and my baby in the womb!
The device was purchased from Apollo Pharmacy, Malancha branch (Tollygunj) and they have now taken back the Glucometer accepting that the device was faulty. Now my question is what they would have done if I had started taking medicine based on that faulty glucometer reading? I am worried how these brands are coming out and marketing such crucial monitoring devices for customers based on which doc do their diagnosis and prescribe medicine! Not only we but the unborn babies are also at high risk today!
Look forward to your kind response and support.
Best Regards,
