HDFC Card smart pay issue

Dear All,
I have opted for smartpay option in March 09 for my Airtel 2 mobile bills. Got messege on 01-04-09 that your smartpay facility is active. I confirmed same on phone from credit card dept, and got messege that I need not pay as bill will be paid directly by card.
My bill due date was 09-04-2009. Bill was not paid till 17 th so I paid same personnaly.
Now Airtel charged me late payment fee for my number, which I am not going to pay , as there is no fault at my end.
Also , there is no fault at airtel end, as smartpay is activated by HDFC cards, and for getting bill from Airtel, HDFC should follow, not the customer.
Plz suggest regarding the same.
