Airtel DTH – Unfair Trade Practice and cheating

I am a subscriber of Airtel Digital TV Customer ID 3003621782 . I had been subscribing to monthly packages in the past. In July 2012 I wanted to switch over to long duration pack for South for one year for which the then subscription amount was quoted as Rs. 1,450/-. When I approached Airtel through their Bangalore Call Centre they lured me with an offer of Life Time Free Top up of ESPN/Star Sports/Star Cricket for payment of additional R.s 500 (one time levy). They promised that the Free top up will be provided even if I change to some other main subscription package in future. Suddenly they informed that they are replacing the above Top Up with some other two channels, in which I had no interest. When I contacted their call center I was informed that Airtel has the right to change the package at its whim and fancy which I objected to. By email dated 6th December they gave one month free top up. However they discontinued this from 28th December. When contacted I was advised to make additional payment of Rs. 50 + per month for this. I again pointed out that they had collected extra Rs. 500 for Life Time Free Top up., but no proper explanation was given. The Call Centre attendant mentioned that the Company has right to change the Channels as it deems fit, which is against the law and is an unfair trade practice. Where the subscription has been paid in advance for agreed packages, the Company has no right whatsoever to withdraw the same except when the channels go off air from the DTH. In ths case ESPN/SC/SS are very much on air in Airtel, which the Company has agreed to provide free for life time by taking one time additional payment, which has been paid in advance. Hence I wish to reiterate that this should be adhered to so long as I continue with Airtel. In fact at the time of change over to long term package, I specifically asked Airtel’s representative if ESPN will continue as Life Time Free even if I change my base package and it was confirmed to me unequivocally that IT WILL. In this connection I wish to point out that at the time of offering the Free Life Time Top Up by collecting Rs. 500 additional amount, Star did not have telecast rights for matches played in India. Subsequently, they got the contract from BCCI for 5 years. Hence to swindle the customers, Airtel has made this a pay channel even for cases where they have agreed for Free Life Time Top Up after collecting extra money. This is a clear case of unfair trade practice and I feel, Airtel has cheated many customers like this to make quick buck, at the cost of unsuspecting customers. Since we are small and do not have the time and energy to raise the issue before the appropriate forum, the giant corporation is taking us for a raid. Under the circumstances, I plead with you Sir to take up investigation into the issue and render justice to a very small person like me, so that the law of natural justice and the Indian democratic values are upheld.
